What are you reasons for starting yoga?

Maybe you have wanted to practice yoga for a while but have been unsure how to begin. Whatever brought you to your first yoga class, you would of arrived with a set of expectations and goals that you wish to achieve. More than likely you will have more than one goal, but to achieve success in your practice it is important to establish which of your goals is your main priority.

Whenever setting goals, always bear in mind the 'SMART' acronym. Your goals should be: -

SPECIFIC - Fist of all, outline what your specific goal is! This is your main priority durng your practice.

MEASURABLE - Use a reference point to measure your goals so you can evaluate accurately and work towards reaching your goal.

ACHIEVEABLE - What is it you want to achieve? Increased flexibility, weight loss, peace of mind?
Think about your time frame when assessing if your goal is achieveable.

REALISTIC - Don't set yourself up for failure! Make sure your goal is realisitc. If you have never done yoga before and your goal is to do headstand, this may be an unrealistic goal.

TIMELY - Have you allowed enough time for your goal? During a 6 week programme can you realistically achieve this goal or do you need to break your goal down into smaller mor manageable steps?

For example, If your SPECIFIC main goal is to improve your posture, it would be essential to take photographs of yourself from the front, side and back at the beginning and end of the programme to MEASURE you results. You will ACHIEVE better posture by practicing spine lengthening sequences and by being more mindful when standing in mountain pose. Think about how your posture would be if you felt miserable. It would be slouched and depressed. After practicing yoga for several weeks and you start to feel better mentally this will reflect in your posture. Say you have set yourself 6 weeks to improve your posture. This TIME frame is REALISTIC and achieveable.
You can instantly improve your posture by standing in mountain posture. This will help to re-align the spine and allows for more space to be created within the organs of the body improving health and wellbeing.

Once you have clearly stated your goal it is important to set an intention to help that goal come to fruition.
